From E-commerce to Clinical Results: Engineering a Fully Integrated Digital Ecosystem for Biomedge

Our project with BiomEdge showcases our ability to architect and develop a multi-faceted system that seamlessly integrates a public-facing webshop with a secure, private portal, creating a complete end-to-end user journey.

BiomEdge required a comprehensive digital platform to sell and manage clinical tests. The core vision was to create a seamless process for customers, from purchasing a test online to receiving their results and sharing them with their trusted health practitioners.

The project was divided into two primary components with a set of ambitious goals:

1. The Webshop: To build a user-friendly e-commerce platform for selling two distinct clinical tests, complete with a custom-developed Partner Program to foster business growth.
2. The Portal: To create a secure, multi-user portal where customers, their therapists (partners), and the laboratory could interact with test results and data in a controlled and confidential environment.
3. Seamless Integration: To ensure a smooth and intuitive transition for users moving from the point of sale on the webshop to the data and results management on the portal.

The main challenge was to orchestrate two technically distinct platforms—a WordPress-based webshop and a custom-built portal—to function as one cohesive unit. This required meticulous planning to manage the flow of data and users between systems while ensuring robust security and distinct permissions for different user roles.

Key technical challenges included:

• Integrating a Custom Partner Program: We needed to develop a bespoke revenue-sharing program for therapists and integrate it directly within the WooCommerce framework.
• Managing a Complex User Journey: The system had to track a customer's progress from purchase, to sample submission, to the lab receiving the sample, and finally to the results being uploaded and viewed.
• Implementing Multi-Level Secure Access: The portal required a sophisticated permissions structure to ensure customers could only see their own results, while therapists could only see the results of clients who granted them access, and the lab had a dedicated interface solely for uploading results.
• Automated and Timely Notifications: A crucial requirement was to build an automated notification system to keep both customers and their therapists informed of key status changes throughout the entire process.

We engineered a powerful hybrid solution that leverages the strengths of best-in-class e-commerce technology alongside a fully custom, secure application.

1. The E-commerce Engine: WordPress & WooCommerce

For the public-facing webshop, we chose WordPress for its flexibility and powerful content management capabilities. The e-commerce functionality is driven by WooCommerce, providing a reliable and familiar shopping experience for customers.

Payment Integration: To offer flexibility and security, we integrated both Stripe and PayPal, two of the world's leading payment gateways.
Custom Partner Program: We developed a custom module that integrates with WooCommerce, allowing therapists to join the Partner Program and earn revenue, creating a powerful growth engine for Biomedge.

2. The Secure Core: The Biomedge Portal

The Portal is the secure heart of the Biomedge system, where all sensitive data is managed. After purchasing a test, customers can register on this separate, custom-built platform.

• User & Data Management: During registration, a customer can designate their therapist. This action creates a secure link, granting the specified therapist permission to view the customer's future test results.
• Dedicated User Roles: The portal features distinct interfaces for:
       Customers: To view their results and manage their therapist connection.
       Therapists (Partners): To view the results of their linked clients, aiding in their professional work.
       The Laboratory: A simple, secure interface designed for the single purpose of uploading test result files to the correct user's profile.
• Value-Added Tools: To further support the therapists' work, we integrated a secondary, free-to-use microbiome questionnaire directly into the portal, providing them with additional valuable data.
• Automated Communication: The portal's backend powers a robust notification system, automatically sending email alerts to both customers and linked therapists at critical stages of the process (e.g., "Sample Received by Lab," "Your Results Are Ready").

The launch of the BiomEdge platform has successfully transformed a complex logistical process into a streamlined, user-friendly digital experience. The final product is more than just a website; it is a complete service delivery ecosystem.

The dual-platform architecture provides the perfect balance: the familiarity and power of a WordPress/WooCommerce shop for sales, and the security and custom functionality of a dedicated portal for managing sensitive health data.
